Your Friday Evening Briefing
By ANDREA KANNAPELL AND WILLIAM NABERS

1. The town of Roseburg, Ore., mourned the dead and comforted survivors a day after a 26-year-old gunman killed nine people at a community college. Law enforcement officials said the man, Chris Harper Mercer, had been armed with six guns and left seven other firearms at home, all purchased legally.
2. Tales of heroism also began to emerge. A 30-year-old Army veteran, Chris Mintz, was shot five times and sustained two broken legs after trying to block a door to keep Mr. Mercer out, according to his aunt. He "gets shot three times, hits the floor, looks up at the gunman and says 'It's my son's birthday today,' gets shot two more times," she said.
