Amid headlines of war and crime, in 1915 the Topeka State Journal called attention to the amazing program for fly eradication in the state capital that began in 1913. Initially a challenge put forth by the city's mayor - $5 for a peck of flies delivered - the program quickly turned into an ongoing city-wide activity. The City Sanitary Sergeant offered 50 cents per peck and within weeks more than 140 pecks were collected and incinerated, much to the relief of horses, housewives and restaurant owners....
