Your Tuesday Evening Briefing
By ANDREA KANNAPELL AND SANDRA STEVENSON
Good evening. Here's the start of tonight's briefing. Go to the full briefing.
1. Pope Francis jetted from Cuba to the U.S. for a red-carpet greeting from the president and vice president and members of their families, church leaders, an honor guard and a high school band, driving off in a modest Fiat. The next six days will immerse him in a church in upheaval; a nation fractured politically on climate change, poverty and abortion; and a U.N. session shadowed by war and migration crises.
2. Volkswagen fell deeper in disgrace, admitting that it sold 11 million diesel cars around the world programmed to cheat on emissions tests. The company earmarked billions of dollars to fix the vehicles, but consumer trust was shattered. The company's stock fell sharply for a second day.
European stock markets suffered deep losses, including a 3.7 percent drop in Germany's DAX. U.S. stocks were sharply lower: The Dow declined 1.1 percent, the S.&P. 500 1.2 percent and the Nasdaq 1.5 percent.
