Good evening. Here's the start of tonight's briefing. 
1. Canada's parliamentary elections yielded a huge upset. Justin Trudeau led the country's Liberal Party to victory, decisively ending the nine-year tenure of the Conservative Stephen Harper. The new leader is a former snowboard instructor and high school teacher who came late to politics, but his name may be familiar: His father was the flamboyant prime minister of past decades, Pierre Trudeau.
2. The American Cancer Society eased off its recommendations for aggressive breast cancer screening after a review of research data, suggesting women with no heightened risk factors start having mammograms later and repeat them less often. That deepened the debate on screening and prompted an expert to worry about "the potential to create a lot of confusion amongst women and primary care providers."
