Your Friday Evening Briefing
By ANDREA KANNAPELL AND SANDRA STEVENSON
Good evening. Here's the start of tonight's briefing. Go to the full briefing.
1. Somber ceremonies in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania commemorated the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the deadliest terrorist operation ever on U.S. soil. "Some parts of it feel like it was yesterday, and some parts feel like it was so long ago," said a woman whose husband was killed.
2. Serena Williams does everything big, including lose. An astounding upset by an unseeded Italian, Roberta Vinci, ended her 33-match winning streak at Grand Slam tournaments and cost her the historic chance to win four in a calendar year. The winner offered sympathy "for the American people, for Serena, for the Grand Slam and everything. But today is my day. Sorry, guys."
3. The U.S. Open rolls on. Ms. Vinci faces her fellow Italian Flavia Pennetta at 3 p.m. Eastern on Saturday for the title. The men's final comes on Sunday at 4 p.m. Eastern, with the winners of today's semifinals: Novak Djokovic vs. Marin Cilic (playing now) and Roger Federer vs. Stan Wawrinka (7:30 p.m. Eastern, all ESPN).
