Good evening. Here's the start of tonight's briefing. Go to the full briefing. 
1. Pope Francis met an exuberant welcome in Washington, and he and President Obama struck a tone of partnership in taking on climate change and poverty. Francis later spoke to U.S. bishops, promising that he had "not come to judge you or to lecture you" but warning against "the temptation to become notaries and bureaucrats." He also canonized a Spanish missionary who some critics say brutalized Native Americans.
2. China's president, Xi Jinping, made the rounds of tech giants in Seattle, but his pending trip to Washington was shadowed by news that a yearlong security breach that the U.S. traced to his country was even worse than previously known. The main custodian of government personnel records said the hackers had stolen the fingerprints of 5.6 million federal workers.
