From NBC's Carrie Dann and Andrew Rafferty

On a day so fraught with sadness, tension and big questions about race in America, typical politics rightfully took a backseat to the shootings in Dallas today. Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump both cancelled campaign events (though Clinton will still address members of the AME church later today.) In an interview on MSNBC, Clinton noted the "deep divides" in the country and called for a "national conversation.. Seeing each other, walking in each others' shoes." And in an uncharacteristically measured statement, Donald Trump called for "strong leadership, love and compassion." In a climate as divisive as the one that we face now -- just weeks until a pair of conventions sure to throw partisan differences into sharp relief -- both presumptive nominees will face the challenge of trying to show their ability to unite an aching country. But in an election with two candidates viewed with unprecedented negativity - and with a cavernous racial divide - it's grimly difficult to imagine a summer that ends with more national optimism and not less.
